like the shoreline of a lake
24h Residency Project
June 20, 2011
AWA Gallery at Overtoom 301
Amsterdam, NL
A pencil is used to trace all the shapes and imperfections on the floor of the AWA Gallery. The actual pencil lines are then cut from the paper. The “positive” pencil lines are hung on the wall according to size. Upon entering the gallery space, the pencil cut-outs are barely visible on the wall, making the gallery appear to be completely empty at first. The remaining “negative” papers are stacked.
This project uses the line as both a literal and metaphorical in-between space. It references both the perception of reality—as in the already existing imperfections within the space—and imagination—as in the possible borders of lakes and territories the shapes reference once taken out of their original context.
